bbbb 179x300 The Blind Side set for $200 million

This weekend, The Blind Side became the first female-led movie to cross the $200 million mark at the box office, thus leveling out of the well documented Sandra Bullock super-awesome 2009. For me, however, is not surprising that this film was so good, and I do not think it’s all due to Bullock (through a star name of any assistance to any movie) or women.

Blind Side is a good movie idea about a real football player, who throws in a whole different demographic. Do not get me wrong, it is far from being bad for women in any way – every time a female star, including one on 40, the rings of a huge box office success, an angel gets its wings, as I’m concerned. This means more pieces to the ladies of a certain age, and nobody complains about that.

But her success with The Proposal earlier last year might prove the greater feat for womankind, as it was one more sign (along with Sex and the City’s blockbuster run and Meryl Streep’s current status as America’s Sweetheart) that the next generation of romantic comedy stars — you know, that “next Julia Roberts” and “next Meg Ryan” Hollywood is always allegedly looking for — might not be the next generation, but the very same generation, doing good work in good films aimed solely at adult women (as opposed to teen Twihards).

Good romantic comedies demonstrate the power of the female audience, and most of them we support, is going to get better. More importantly, we need large, women experienced in the leading roles. (Julia that she will more than next year, with almost sure things Valentine’s Day and Eat, Pray, Love, Meg should call your agent to find out how you can jump back in this way, now recognized by the market.)
