After two years lying low following a series of flops at the box office, Bollywood enigmatic ’bad boy’ Salman Khan is set to return in three new films to arrive on the big screen.
The first, “Wanted” is out on Friday. The comedy “Main Aur Mrs Khanna” (Me and Mrs. Khanna) and “Dreams of London”, two friends who try to become rock stars in London, are set for release in the next two months.
Khan, 43, said he was confident “Wanted”, would be successful. The film sees him play a gangster on the run from police – including a senior police officer played by veteran actor Om Puri – and fellow gang members who want him dead.
“And ’the screenplay for the film,” he said. “It has all the ingredients of a Bollywood Potboiler. When I read the script, I was 100 percent which to choose.”
Khan has been a controversial figure since he first broke into Bollywood in 1980 late in the family drama “BIWI Ho To Aisi” (A wife should be so) and the novel “Maine Pyar Kiya” (I’m In Love).
He has cemented himself as one of the stars in Bollywood with hits like “Bhaaghi: a rebel for love”, “Patthar Ke Phool (Stone Flower),” Saajan “(Hearthrob) and” Hum Aapke Hain Kaun “(Who Am I To You?) in 1990.
But in 1998, spent more than a week in jail for killing the endangered Indian gazelles in the northern state of Rajasthan, and four years later, he was suspected of killing a man in a drink driving case of Mumbai .
After the overwhelming success of the 2003 edition of “Tere Naam” (In Your Name) in the last five years have seen even more packed with Khan, but has maintained its high profile and fans through regular appearances on television shows in the games.
Khan, with his trademark slicked-back hair, two gold earrings and t-shirts designed to show his bulging biceps, posing his appeal for lack of pretense.
“I do not behave like a star when they are on television. I look like a common man and also act like them, then the series is very popular,” he said.
Asked what went wrong with his career over the past two years, added: “I feel it was the length of the film that went against me.
“Today, the Indian public opinion does not have the patience for the film together, and then the film flops film because they were long.”
Khan’s three new films have been accompanied by a blizzard of pre-publicity, media incredible Indians who have become accustomed to their interview requests fall on deaf ears or be accepted only reluctantly.
Column inches were devoted instead to the living body of speculation on the love life of the manufacturer after it was painted with a number of leading actresses of Bollywood, including former Miss World Aishwarya Rai.
His current girlfriend is model-turned-actress Katrina Kaif.
“I realized that it is important to speak with the media,” said Khan.
“I feel if you remain silent, the media began making up stories about me, then you better go out and talk about what kind of person are a bit ’of what to tell others what kind of person I am.”
But Monday, Hindustan Times has suggested that there may be another reason behind what he called Khan “overexposure,” suggesting that he could have “much more to lose” if “Wanted” flop.
