Iñárritu Mexico leads the jury of the festival in Tokyo
“Babel” director Alejandro González Iñárritu, will head the jury at the International Film Festival in Tokyo in October.
The name of the Mexican filmmaker organizers of the jury in a statement on his official site. The 21th edition of the film festival is scheduled for October 18-26.
Iñárritu was quoted as saying he was honored with the appointment because “Japan’s culture and traditions of movies have had an impact on me and inspire the respect and admiration.”
The former Marine and the DJ made his debut with the film’s 2000 release “Amores Perros.” The story of four residents of Mexico City, who are in a car accident starring Gael García Bernal, won the Grand Prix prize at the Festival in Tokyo in 2000. Iñárritu went on to lead the 2003 American drama “21 Grams,” starring Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn and Naomi Watts.
However, the Mexican director best known in the West for “Babel,” which weaves stories set in Morocco, the United States-Mexico border region and Japan. In 2006, the film starring Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett and Bernal Iñárritu won the best director of the Cannes Film Festival that year.
Also won six Oscar nominations, including best supporting actress, Rinko Kikuchi of Japan, but only won for best score.
