300 - The War Movie of the Moment

If you are thinking about going to the movies these days, you might want to ask first: “How does the Box Office look this week?” Well, besides the animation movie Meet the Robinsons and the comedy Blades of Glory, there is one - let’s say, more serious movie - that is worth your attention: 300, directed by Zack Snyder. Not only did this movie gather impressive amounts of people in the movie theatres, but it also got excellent reviews, sometimes even five out of five stars. Here is why:
You might be tempted to think that the story is the best aspect of the movie - but both critics and viewers say that the most spectacular thing about 300 is represented by its out-of-this-world visual effects. The dynamics of the actions is perfectly combined with the intense, even over-the-top sounds, with the thrilling, and, at the same time, violent and sudden battle moments.
The story has been the subject of other war movies in the past: back in the year 480 B.C., King Leonidas of Sparta faced an overwhelming Persian army at Thermopylae, after refusing to surrender at the request of Persian King Xerxes. When watching 300, you will see a lot of patriotic scenes, pride, courage, braveness, determination, sacrifice and many shaking and massively touching moments that make the movie incredibly dramatic.
The movie’s slogan itself is advising you to “prepare for glory” - you can take this literally, since the movie culminates, after an impressive battle, with an even more impressive ideological victory, that supposedly inspired the Greeks to unite against Persia and to aspire to democracy - but you can also be sure that the movie, is, indeed, glorious and definitely worth watching.
