Amazing Grace - An Inspirational Historical Drama

Amazing Grace promised to be a great movie and it seems that the promise was kept. Directed by Michael Apted, with a woven story and noticeable performances, the movie proved to be worth-watching.
The story is focused on the struggle of a member of the 18th century English Parliament to put an end to slavery and to the trades with slaves. William Wilberforce, to be exact, played by Ioan Gruffudd, was tempted to opt for the isolated life of a monk, but his oratory talent and power to change the world determined him to fight for both justice and faith. Or, just like the movie says, “The true story of the song that inspired the world and the man who changed history” since, in fact, the name of the movie represents the well known song Amazing Grace.
You can’t really comprise this movie in one specific genre. It is a bit romantic, a bit religious, it contains a relevant amount of political information, it is a sort of thrilling in some parts and obviously, it can also be categorized as a drama. A genuine, fully emotional drama that unleashes noble virtues and values. Actually, this is what the movie is about, ideologically speaking: values, or better said THE values, equality, fraternity and justice, “Remember that God made men equal”, as the main hero claims - sounds familiar?
With such a powerful historical inspiration, the movie manages to be differentiated from the - let’s say - more superficial Hollywood movies that evolve around a few guns, a few shooting scenes or around situational humor and clichés. And this is the main reason why the public calls Amazing Grace a “serious movie”, regardless if that’s a positive or overwhelming remark - after all, it depends on the viewer’s mood.
