It’s Just A Movie

If you are too indolent to get out of the bed and go to the movie theatre in order to see the latest Hollywood (and not only) film productions, then you might want to know what you can watch from home, from your comfortable sofa, with a big bowl of popcorn in front of you. Obviously, you are looking for recent movies, 2007, if possible - well here is one movie that was released in January and that can be seen on DVD this month: Smokin’ Aces, a genuine dark action comedy directed by Joe Carnahan (Narc might sound familiar).

Since it’s an action movie and not a sweet cheesy romance, the story is less relevant and less fantastic than the explosive and ruthless action scenes, with shooting and the whole package. But, anyway, here is the summarized story: the FBI are counting on showman Israel to testify regarding mob affairs - simple enough, but the plot gets complicated when a few assassins (well, actually, a lot of them) find out that there is a huge price on his head and, obviously, attempt to hunt, smoke, eliminate, or simpler said, to kill him. But watch out! These are not just any assassins, they are “Seven hitmen: they’re ruthless, they’re degenerate, they’re psychotic, and they’re relentless [only qualities, right?]. May the best hitman win.” And we sure do trust the movie’s tagline! But what’s at stake, or, better said, how much is at stake? Well, one million dollars, enough to stimulate the assassins to “smoke” Israel.

OK, one last detail to make you get the DVD: who plays in the movie? Quite impressive distribution: Ben Affleck, Andy Garcia, Ray Liotta, Jeremy Piven, Ryan Reynolds, Peter Berg, Martin Henderson, Taraji Henson and, to spoil your eyes (and/or your ears), Alicia Keys. Enjoy!
