Black Book - “An Untold Story of World War II”

If you are up for a serious, deep and “politically charged” movie, not to mention, foreign movie, then the first one on your list should be Black Book. No, not the romantic comedy with Brittany Murphy from 2004.
Just like the tagline says, the movie is an actual “untold story of World War II”, a story with a female hero for a change. More precisely, the movie presents Ellis, a Jewish woman who, after a total identity change, manages to infiltrate with the enemy and to work as an undercover spy for the Dutch. In addition to the drama at high levels, there are numerous intelligently created action scenes, plus a dosage of unpredictability.
You might be surprised to find out that the movie is directed by no one else than Paul Verhoeven. Doesn’t ring any bells? In this case, Basic Instinct definitely rings bells. You guessed, he is the director behind the 90’s erotically charged film and behind this war drama - and he sure managed to do a great job in both cases - after all, erotism is not missing, nor is it unobservable in Black Book.
The movie might not be as commercially successful as the inspirational film The Pianist, but managed to gather wide ranges of applauses and five star ratings. Even though the public seems to “digest” war movies pretty roughly, especially foreign war movies, Black Book managed to make it in the Box Office up to an admirable position. In addition, Black Book presents an impressive portfolio of awards, from Golden Lion or Golden Calf to Platinum Films and from British Academy Film Awards to Diamond Films, not to mention that it almost made it on the Oscars list. Enjoy!
