Pan’s Labyrinth - Enter the Fantasy World!

Pan’s Labyrinth is not just any fantasy movie for the little ones that comes to dethrone Harry Potter. Oh, no, no. We are actually talking about one of those movies which seem to get five starts out of five - After all, Pan’s Labyrinth was awarded with three Oscar trophies, namely for best cinematography, best makeup and best art direction.
Imagine it like this: a considerable dosage of the complex Big Fish fantasy mood with a hint of Harry Potter magical flavor, but with even more imagination, creativity and depth - this is Pan’s Labyrinth. Even though some might expect a random fairytale - and usually, fairytales are for the little ones - the facts are that this movie is so much more than that.
The heroin is a young girl who starts a new life, a life that involves a harsh step-father and very high demands. The girl discovers a labyrinth with comes with an additional visionary world and surprises - for starters, she discovers she is the princess of an old kingdom. What is unexpected about this movie is than fact that, generally, in fantasy movies, the imaginary worlds seem to function as compensatory worlds, where everything is better, shinier, glossier and pinker than in the cruel, dark reality. Well, not in Pan’s Labyrinth. Actually, the fantasy world seems to be even more heinous and scary than the real one. Yes, that would be the number one reason why little kids were not meant to be the main target viewers of this film - not unless they want to have nightmares.
One of the best features of the film is represented, without any doubt, by the visuals - thanks to the visionary mind and imagination of Guillermo Del Toro. Be prepared to be creatively stimulated and sent to a deep, complex and thrilling fantastic world. Enjoy!
