Evan Almighty - When Religion and Comedy Make a Film

evanIt’s been a long time since we’ve seen a comedy with biblical in inspiration. Oh wait, it’s been a long time since we have seen any kind of movie with a substantial amount of religious dosage. But, surprisingly or not, the Box Office chart is leaded these days by Evan Almighty - and, as you guessed just by reading the name, the movie’s got biblical motifs and background.

One of the most impressive features of this movie (no, not the story, nor is it the artistic vision behind it) is the budget. And what a budget! More precisely, 175 million dollars - judging by it, we might be inclined to think that we are talking about a super science-fiction movie with loads of special effects. And we are not.

But the thing is: does religion mix well with comedy? With light comedy, may we add? The movie can actually be funny, but can also be overly cartoonish. It can be laughable, but the jokes can be interpreted as, well, juvenile. It can be entertaining, but it can also be corny.

So, here is the story: God chooses Evan to build a boat - yes, just like Noah did. And Evan has an adventure while trying to accomplish God’s plans. And Evan is a congressman - funny choice, right? Who plays God, you ask? Morgan Freeman will be the answer. Who interprets Evan? Steve Carell does. So, there you go! You know pretty much everything you need to know about the movie. If you can get pass the childish package and situational humor, it can turn out to be quite a fun family film, so enjoy!
