As an icon of a tendency to caricature, Orson Welles lines at a height of Truman Capote and Ray Charles.
But in “Me and Orson Welles,” our conception of the great no, the charismatic director and dramatic is simple, but a glance. We see from the perspective of a young midshipman, Richard Samuels (Zac Efron), who landed a small role in Welles’ 1937 production of Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” at the Mercury Theater in New York.
Welles, then only 22 years, began to be talked about on radio and on stage with his “Voodoo Macbeth”, which was made in Haiti. ‘S “Caesar” – “lean, brutal” Caesar “as the calls in the film, set in contemporary Fascist Italy – was a sensation. Welles, shortly after the start of work on” Citizen Kane. ”
Famine was imminent and Welles knew.
Christian McKay, an actor known British stage, plays Welles Richard Linklater’s “Me and Orson Welles, and clearly has the lowest Pat – his eyebrows arched in continuous evolution, the baritone sound, the ‘old man.” Welles and McKay to stop in their accuracy, even if at the same time, maintains its shine under a chandelier Welles.
This is the case, however, to express the mixture of Welles ‘genius’ and – like his “Caesar” of brutality – his. He ordered his troops the same way that attracts our attention. He is fascinated by the creation and reinvention, and has little patience with the “players of their vision.”
Agents humble is Richard, the ‘I’ in the title. In one day, managed to jump out of high school in New Jersey, chatting with two girls attractive enough to impress a role in Welles Caesar and learn to pay the ukulele. Fans of Efron ( “High School Musical,” “17 Again”) may ask what optimism can not reach Teenybopper.
Richard path in life is certain, but wants to be passionate about theater, film and music. This is a portrait of the artist as a young lover.
Efron has a presence, easy-natural on screen and his performance is easy and secure. But not too much weight, and the biggest problem for “Me and Orson Welles” is that it disappears from view Efron McKay and made the film feels slight.
But much of what Linklater has created is remarkable. The director ( “Dazed and Confused,” “Before Sunset, Waking Life”) has a special talent in the chronicle of stories of old novels, and equally balanced with naturalism. In this case, the romance is the theater, or, more generally, the creation of art.
“Me and Orson Welles” rack evidence Shabby appreciates jokes. Linklater makes the internal dynamics of the business: Welles placate the ego of her Antony, George Coulouris (Ben Chaplin), speaking with his partner and producer John Houseman (Eddie Marsan), concerned about the superstitions of the theater, and a poor man has to happen before the opening night ( “some evil spirit must be exorcised,” intones Welles).
Just before the curtain, Welles tells his cast: “Make ‘Em Sweat” – and you want to shoot Linklater has something of the same urgency and desire.
With eyes wide open Richard – “Junior” Welles – takes everything in like a fly on the wall. Jones Falls with Sonja (Claire Danes), a young aspiring actress who works as an assistant to Welles.
Like many others in the film, this is bristling with ambition. Dreaming of a career in Hollywood, which is struggling to cope with the producer David O. Selznick – a goal that could easily be replaced every relationship that develops between her and Richard.
“Me and Orson Welles” is based on historical fiction novel by Robert Kaplow. Despite the context of Welles and his troupe is based on the story, the story of Richard is totally imaginary.
The production design by Laurence Dorman is excellent. Although outside of New York are like the false fronts of something future study as a “gang” at the Mercury Theater – where most of the movie takes place – it seems true.
Ultimately, “Me and Orson Welles” is a life-changing brush with fame, a brief moment in time with a star on the ignition – and the enduring influence of the alleged witness the thrill of a lifetime art. There is nothing like the weight or Orson Welles, but is sufficiently flexible that it could avoid a smile or two from the first.
PG “Me and Orson Welles,” has remained a CinemaNX and Isle of Man Film Output, -13 sexual references and smoking. Duration: 114 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.
