“Harry Potter”, “Sherlock Holmes” – and now “Dear John” by Nicholas Sparks. All these characters have gone from the pages of books in the images on the screen. Books films is a tradition, but how closely they honor the original copy?
At the Naperville Public Library, that the issue is often discussed. “Oh, I loved the movie – and the book!” Library users say. And we hear the opposite: “The movie was not anywhere near as good as the book.”
This discussion starts young. Stamogiannos Misty, one of the teen librarians of the library, this debate has heard many times.
“The students are lively Naperville readers. But I also love movies,” he said. “It’s fun to compare the movie with the book – and vice versa. In fact, we often find that young people are excited about reading the book after seeing the film.”
This is the case with two recent releases: “Sherlock Holmes” and “Dear John”. Robert Downey Jr., undoubtedly represents a very different Sherlock Holmes Jeremy Brett, but his real character of the book? Director Lasse Hallström not ignore important parts of Sparks book, “Dear John”?
